Add additional earnings
Additional earnings are anything paid on top of hours worked. They are added to a draft payroll run, before it is submitted.
Add one
Section titled “Add one”- Open the draft run for the pay period.
- Find the employee and select Add earning.
- Choose the earning type, enter the amount, and save.
Amounts are entered per employee, per run. If the same bonus applies to several people, add it to each — there is no store-wide “everyone gets this” shortcut, on purpose.
Choosing the right type
Section titled “Choosing the right type”The type is not a label. It tells payroll what the money is, and that is what drives how the amount is handled and how it appears on the pay statement.
- Bonus — extra pay on top of wages, such as a performance or holiday bonus.
- Tips — tip income being paid through payroll.
- Reimbursement — repaying a business expense the employee already paid for out of pocket.
Tax treatment depends on the earning type and on your jurisdiction, and it is applied by your payroll provider — not chosen here. Clockout records what you entered and the type you entered it under; the provider calculates the resulting taxes and withholding. That is exactly why the type matters: enter a reimbursement as a bonus, or a bonus as a reimbursement, and the money is classified wrongly for the whole calculation.
If you are not sure which type applies to a payment, consult your accountant or tax advisor before you submit — after submission the run is locked.
Check it before submitting
Section titled “Check it before submitting”Additional earnings show as their own lines in the draft. Review them alongside hours in the same pass:
- The amount is in dollars, not hours.
- The right employee, especially where two people share a first name.
- The right run — a bonus for last period cannot be moved once this one is submitted.
Then submit as usual — see Run payroll. The result appears on the employee’s statement as described in Read a pay statement.
